About the Sonar – The Sonar is a 23-foot one-design keelboat that showcased at the 1996 Paralympic Games, where the sport was a demonstration event. The Sonar has been the three-person keelboat at every subsequent Paralympics. In para sailing mode it is sailed by a crew of three, without a spinnaker, using a whisker pole with the jib. The Sonar is well-suited for sailing for people with disabilities because of its large open cockpit, making adaptations relatively easy.
About the Martin 16 – The Martin 16 is a fractional sloop rig, a transom-hung rudder and a lifting weighted bulb keel. Both the mainsail and the jib are mounted with booms. Sailors sit in a forward-facing seat, and all controls and lines are led to the cockpit to allow sailing without having to move from that seat. The rudder is controlled with a joystick. There is a second seat behind the command seat for a passenger, crew or instructor.
